Epidemic-style Communication Primitives Exploiting Network Topology Information

چکیده
Gossip-based communication and epidemic-style routing algorithms have been proposed to achieve scalability in distributed systems and to support probabilistic communication when the application of the classic deterministic algorithms and protocols is impossible or unsuitable. In this paper, we present a middleware for probabilistic communication that relies on optimised epidemic-style information dissemination techniques for distributed systems, based on recent results of complex networks theory. The novelty of our approach resides in the evaluation and the exploitation of the structure of the underlying network for the automatic tuning of the dissemination process to control. With respect to unicast communication, we show that protocols that statistically ensure the desired reliability level in the case of homogeneous networks (i.e., a network composed of nodes with the same degree of connectivity) can be designed. We demonstrate that these results can be exploited also in the case of anycast and multicast communication to tune and optimise the replication process. We evaluate our approach analysing the application of these techniques to the case of mobile ad hoc systems, a specific class of distributed systems. Finally, we generalise the model to the case of heterogeneous networks.

Epidemic protocols proved to be very efficient solutions for supporting dynamic and complex information diffusion in highly distributed computing infrastructures, like P2P environments. They are useful bricks for building and maintaining virtual network topologies, in the form of overlay networks as well as to support pervasive diffusion of information when it is injected into the network. Topology construction and topology maintenance are significant sub-problems of topology control. Spanning tree based algorithms for topology control are basically transmission range based type construction algorithms. The construction of an effective backbone, however, is indirectly related to the placement of nodes. Also, the dependence of network reliability on the communication path undertak...
متن کاملControlled Epidemic-style Data Dissemination in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks
Traditional routing mechanisms for mobile ad hoc networks fail when disconnection is frequent and when the network gets temporarily partitioned. The alternative approach for message delivery is flooding, which, however, comes with large transmission overheads. Gossip-based communication and epidemic-style routing algorithms have been proposed to achieve scalability in distributed systems and to...
متن کاملA new virtual leader-following consensus protocol to internal and string stability analysis of longitudinal platoon of vehicles with generic network topology under communication and parasitic delays
In this paper, a new virtual leader following consensus protocol is introduced to perform the internal and string stability analysis of longitudinal platoon of vehicles under generic network topology. In all previous studies on multi-agent systems with generic network topology, the control parameters are strictly dependent on eigenvalues of network matrices (adjacency or Laplacian). Since some ...

This paper is concerned with the consensus tracking problem of high order MIMO nonlinear multi-agent systems. The agents must follow a leader node in presence of unknown dynamics and uncertain external disturbances. The communication network topology of agents is assumed to be a fixed undirected graph. A distributed adaptive control method is proposed to solve the consensus problem utilizing re...
